Finally….after being teased 12 months ago, The Book of Boba Fett Episode 1 – Stranger in a Strange Land was released on Disney Plus 29th December 2021.
** SPOILER WARNING **
The episode opens on us discovering Boba Fett in Jabba’s Palace recuperating in a Bacta Tank having flashbacks to how he escaped the Sarlacc Pit and then being captured and tortured by Tusken raiders.
Then we are brought to present day and Fennec Shand, played by Ming-Na Wen, wakes Boba to get ready and prepare to meet the crime factions and power brokers in play now that Bib Fortuna has been deposed as crime boss on Tatooine.
These faction leaders and the Mos Espa Mayor’s major-domo introduce themselves and we can see that it will not be plain sailing as a crime lord as it was for the once feared bounty hunter.
Boba & Fennec spare the life of two Gamorrean Guards and they head to an establishment to introduce themselves. The establishment, called the Sanctuary, is run by a Twi’lek named Garsa Fwip played by Jennifer Beals.
As Boba and Fennec enter the building there is a nod to the cantina band with a Bith and what appears to be Max Rebo playing a well known tune!
All appears to go well until they hit the streets and are attacked by 6 hooded assailants with red shield emitters. With the help of the Gamorreans they are dispatched and Fennec gives chase and captures one….for future episodes…….
Boba seems that he is still not quite fully fit and needs to get back to the Bacta tank to recover.
He again has flashbacks to when he was in the detention of the Tuskens and being tied to a captured rodian and taken by a youngling to search for water pods. Whilst searching he witnesses thug behaviour from a swoop gang. Possibly the same game seen in the first episode of season 2 of The Mandalorian – The Marshal, raiding Mos Pelgo.
The Rodian uncovers a 6 limbed creature that needs taking down and Boba is up to the challenge. The creature bares a striking resemblance to a Ray Harryhausen creation, I am sure this is a homage to it!
Returning to the Tusken camp, the youngling hails the creatures defeat and Boba looks to have been accepted by the tribe and given freedom by the leader.
I felt this was a great opening episode lots of information linking the OT to now. I am sure there will be more flashbacks in the next episode and perhaps all the way through the series. The will no doubt be struggles with crime cartels and obstacles to overcome.
Where the journey will end,,,who knows. We’ll just have to watch and see.
The Book of Boba Fett is going to be a page turner for me!
